Temperature

TIRUCHI, DEC. 31 . The city today registered a maximum temperature of 30.0 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature is 23.5 degree Celsius.

House burgled

Unidentified culprits gained entry into a locked house at Srirangarayapuram Nochiyam near Mannachanallur in the district and allegedly burgled nearly 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery on Thursday. The owner of the house, Gunasekharan, is a master technician in BHEL, according to the police. Gunasekharan's wife and daughter were away when the culprits struck. On their return last evening, they found the locks broken and jewellery stolen from the almirah. The Mannachanallur police are investigating the case.

Held for stabbing wife

A 55-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his wife in their house at Somarasampettai in the district on Thursday. The police said Selvaraj and Thirassammal (50) had been married for 35 years, but had no children. Suspecting his wife's fidelity, he stabbed her in the stomach. She was admitted to the Government Hospital here. The Somarasampettai police have registered a case.

Darshan timings

The sanctum sanctorum of Sri Renganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam will be open for public darshan from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, on account of the New Year's Day.

An official release issued here today said the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Thayar and Sri Chakrathazhwar would remain open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Health camp

A special health camp was held under the auspices of the Youth Club of Dharmanathapuram in the city to benefit 70 members of the coastal hamlets of Nagapattinam, who fled their villages and arrived in the city on Sunday. Medicines were distributed for respiratory disorders and counselling was given to get over their depression. A team of doctors, led by Senthilvel, screened them.

Hundreds of bags of rice and other essential commodities were despatched by the district governor of the Lions Club, Subramanian, to the tsunami-hit fishermen in the coastal hamlets. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, N. Arivuselvan appealed to the members of the clubs to take steps to supply drugs and medicines.

Mettur level

The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 83.69 feet today. The inflow was 522 cusecs and the discharge 7,795 cusecs.
