Tiruchi
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, DEC. 31 . The usual pomp and gaiety was absent on the eve of the New Year day. Except for the normal religious ritual at churches, where special masses were held, the birth of 2005 did not create any enthusiasm to Tiruchiites, owing to the tsunami tragedy. The typical festive look has vanished from busy centres and thoroughfares in Tiruchi. Youths who used to ride their vehicles exchanging greetings remained indoors. Even many of the people politely refused to acknowledge the New Year greetings. The bursting of crackers at the stroke of midnight was also absent. However, the police maintained a tight vigil at important centres.
