By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, DEC. 31 . Under a special instruction from the Secretary, Rural Development, Shantha Sheela Nair, use of Effective Micro-organisms (EM) has been launched in Nagapattinam district to prevent foul smell and decaying of garbage and other waste, especially in areas where bodies of the victims of the tsunami tragedy have been recovered. The programme will be coordinated by Vinay Kumar, Joint Director, Public Health and M. Subburaman, Managing Director of Tiruchi based NGO, SCOPE. The German specialist in EM based at Auroville, Lucas Dengel, organised a training programme for Nagapattinam health department officials and rural development officials on Wednesday night. EM applications would be made in and around the tsunami-affected areas in Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Vedaranyam, Tharangampadi and Sirkazhi, according to a release issued by Mr. Subburaman here today. Dr. Lucas Dengel said the company manufacturing EM Maple Orgtech (India) Private Limited had given 500 bottles of EM free of cost for use in the affected areas. Micro-organisms are used for killing disease spreading bacteria during natural disasters, the release added.
