CHENNAI, JAN. 8 . The Chennai Corporation will construct within a week at least 5,500 temporary houses for displaced fishermen. According to sources, the State Government has allocated Rs. 8,000 for a house. The civic body accept contributions from non-governmental organisations and corporate bodies for the housing scheme. The Government has set Pongal day deadline for completion of the houses. Officials will identify relocation areas on Sunday and the construction is likely to begin by Tuesday. The buildings will be constructed using light roofing material or asbestos. The temporary settlements will be away from the seashore. According to estimates prepared by the Chennai Collectorate, nearly 16,900 families were affected by the December 26 tsunami. Several houses at Srinivasapuram near Triplicane, Anna Nagar near Tondiarpet, Tiruvanmiyur kuppam, Urror kuppam and Olcott kuppam near Tiruvanmiyur were washed away.
