A panel of judges from different parts of the world adjudged the pets in accordance with international standards. More than 500 pets participated in today's event, according to C.V. Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, Miniature Pinscher, Maltese, Pekingese and Pug under the toy group; Bull Terrier, Fox Terrier (Smooth), Jack Russell Terrier (Smooth) and West Highland Terrier in the terrier group; Bulldog, Lhasa Apso and Poodle (Miniature) in the utility group; Afghan Hound, Caravan Hound, Chippiparai, Mudhol Hound and Rhodesian Ridgeback in the hound group; German Wirehaired Pointer in the Gundog Group; Dogue De Bordeaux, known as French Mastiff, Giant Schnauzer, Siberian Husky, St. Bernard and Great Dane in the working group were some of the rare breeds that took part in the day's events, Mr. Sudarsan said.
Chippiparai breed
Talking about reviving Chippiparai, a pedigree breed of Tamil Nadu, R. Rama Chockalingam of Bodi in Theni district, said the population of this breed was less than 100. It was brought to the State during the Mughul rule and was owned by zamindars. Frugal eaters, the Chippiparai breeds are swift hunters. Mr. Chockalingam is doing research on this breed as it faced extinction. Yet another attraction at today's show was a Tibetan Mastiff breed. Its owner, K. Navraj, said it was for the first time his pet was participating in the show. The Chihuahua in the toy group was the smallest among the pedigree pets on show. Weighing between two and four pounds, it is an ideal choice for apartment dwellers, said its owners.
