Campus Jottings: Cadets lend a helping hand

Being a responsive and highly motivated group, the National Cadet Corps of MDT Hindu College, Tirunelveli, and NCC Officer, P. Kumaresan, collected clothes, medicines and food materials worth Rs. 1.50 lakh from the public and sent the relief materials to the victims of tsunami in Colachel. They, led by the principal, K.S.P. Durairaj, also conducted a saplings planting campaign in their college premises in memory of children, who lost their lives in the tragedy. Since the college has been permitted to run a Mixed Battalion, a four-day trekking programme was recently organised for a select group of NCC cadets, comprising five boys and five girls, at Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve on the Western Ghats. Led by Dr. Kumaresan, they trekked for about 30 kms every day. Later, a firing camp was organised at Cheranmahadevi by Lt. Col. J.K Nair, Commander, 5 TN Battalion, in which the students were trained on operating Light Machine Guns and Self-Loading Rifles.

With an aim to test knowledge of science and current affairs among school students from the district, National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, conducted `Brain NEC-05,' a quiz and essay competition, at its premises recently.

In a thrilling finale, duo of S. Balamurugan and Ramesh Kishore of Lakshmi Mills Higher Secondary School, emerged triumphant in the quiz events, while St Paul's Matriculation Higher Secondary School, represented by G. Britto and S. Gopiganesh, finished a close second.

In the essay competitions, S. Vishnupriya of Nadar Higher Secondary School bagged the top honours in the English category, and S. Christu Raja of R. C. Susai Higher Secondary School came first in the Tamil category.

The staff and students of St. Mary's College, Tuticorin, paid homage to those died in the tsunami disaster by offering a mass prayer at the college premises recently.

Later they collected relief materials such as rice and clothes from various sources and distributed it to the tsunami-affected families in Kanyakumari, Mandaikadu and Colachel.

An In-service training programme for higher secondary and high school teachers in Chemistry and Value Education, sponsored under a X plan scheme, was conducted by Annammal College of Education for Women in Tuticorin in the first week of January.

As many as 73 teachers from Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts attended the programme.

Updating knowledge on recent developments in their respective fields of study is crucial for students to meet the present day requirements of job providers. Proteofest-05, an inter-collegiate meet organised recently by the Department of Biochemistry at Rev. Jacob Memorial Christian College, Ambilikkai, Dindigul district, served as an eye-opener for students to understand and update their knowledge on recent trends in biochemistry. Many experts delivered lectures on various subjects, including metabolic disorders due to gene mutation. Dr. J. Devanand of Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, spoke on techniques used in cancer treatment. The emphasis was on symptoms of the killer disease and methods of diagnosis. He enthralled the audience with some interesting incidents he ran into in his profession. Besides a brain storming session, there were competitions such as rangoli, pot painting and poster presentation, which brought out the creative and latent talents of students. Sri Adi Chunchanagiri College, Cumbum, won the Ayyanar rolling shield for its excellent performance. About 200 students from 11 colleges took part in the meet.

Life is an education to learn. Experience teaches vital things, said the Commissioner (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption), V. Irai Anbu, at a seminar on `Need for value-based education' held in Nadar Saraswathi College of Arts and Science in Theni recently. Later, he had an interaction with the students.

The College had also organised a seminar on `Role of women in preserving Indian culture and tradition' in the college premises recently. In his keynote address, professor of a foreign university, Venkatraman, stressed the importance of hard work and reducing one's needs to lead a comfortable and happy life with utmost satisfaction. Inner beauty was more important than external beauty, he said adding courage, honesty and modesty were virtues essential for success in life.
