Campus Jottings: Stress on spoken English

It was an interesting experience for students of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science at Perambalur, when they attended a question hour session on `Spoken English', as part of inauguration of the Spoken English Certificate Course.

Former Head of Department of English, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, P. Natarajan, gave useful tips to students to improve their linguistic skills. He said teachers should motivate the students to enrich their vocabulary and language skill. He also replied to the queries raised by the students.

He also underlined the importance of reading more books on a variety of topics.

The principal, R.M.Meenakshi, also spoke.

The Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) — Deemed University at Thanjavur celebrated its bi-decennial day on January 10 at a glittering function filled with joyous memories and glorifying tributes.

While delivering the chief guest address, N. Gopalsamy, Director (Wholetime), Dalmia Cement Bharath Ltd. commended the growth of the SASTRA in the last two decades and appreciated its unique teaching-learning environment. Two outstanding and senior academics offered their felicitations.

G. Sundaram, secretary, Seshasayee Institute of Technology and President, Tiruchi, Productivity Council, traced his association with the SASTRA even from its pre-birth stage.

K. G. Seshadri, Dean, Humanities and Sciences, SASTRA, spoke about the success story of the SASTRA and commended its Vice-Chancellor R. Sethuraman.

While welcoming the gathering, Prof. Sethuraman recalled the achievements of the SASTRA in the last 20 years.

The members of the staff, who have served for 20 years and more than 10 years, were presented with a silver plaque. About 135 staff members received mementos.

The function concluded with a violin concert by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan who enthralled the audience with his excellent playing of Thyagaraja kriti "Samaja Vara Gamana" and also M. Subbulakshmi's song "Kuraiyondrumillai Marai Moorthi Kanna" as a homage to the great music genius.

S.Vaidyasubramanian, Dean, Planning and Development, proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Commerce of A. V. C. College (Autonomous), Mayiladuturai, conducted a two-day special workshop on `Application of mathematical and statistical tools in social science research' recently as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the college. The workshop was aimed at providing an opportunity to M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars to improve their efficiency in analysing the research problem by using modern mathematical and statistical techniques.

K. Lakshmanan, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tiruchi region, delivered the keynote address at the first day of the workshop.

C. Senthilvel, Secretary, A.V.C.Education Committee, presided over the function and V. Radhakrishnan, principal of the college and others spoke.

Faculty members from Alagappa and Annamalai Universities and A.V.C.College presented papers at the six technical sessions conducted.

About 75 research scholars and staff members from different faculties attended the workshop, which motivated the research scholars to adopt mathematical and statistical techniques in research problem.

T. Srinivasan, principal of E.G.S.Pillay College of Arts and Science, Nagapattinam, delivered the valedictory address and S. Sukumar, treasurer, A.V.C.Education Committee, presided over the valedictory function. Dr.M.Tamilarasan, Reader and Head of the Department of Commerce, A. V. C. College, organised the workshop.

K. Jayaraj of Chennai, an alumnus of the college, has donated Rs.one lakh for the golden jubilee celebration of the college to C. Sethilvel, secretary of the college, on Tuesday.

The Bharatidasan University Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, stressed the importance of improving the standards of both students and staff in colleges to face the challenges in the present global scenario.

The Vice-Chancellor was delivering the second convocation address at the A.R.C.Visvanathan College, Mayiladuturai, recently. Dr.Thangamuthu distributed degree certificates to 118 graduates.

K. Ilangovan, principal of the college, highlighted the activities of the college.
