Tsunami victims remembered

CHENNAI, JAN. 12. The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, and the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today led the State in paying homage to those who died in the tsunami of December 26.

At the Raj Bhavan, the Governor along with officials and other staff observed silence for two minutes. At the Secretariat, the Chief Minister, reading out a message, said that about 8,000 persons died and over a lakh of people lost their property.

Earlier, the State Cabinet adopted a resolution, condoling the death of the people and calling upon all sections of society to contribute to enable the victims to lead a fresh life. With the permission of the Centre, the national flag flew at half-mast today in memory of the tsunami victims.
