NAGAGAPATTINAM, JAN. 12. The Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt has planned to construct 1,000 permanent houses at Pattinacherry, Samanthampettai and a few villages near Nagore for the tsunami-affected families. According to Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, Chief Operating Officer of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the Mutt provided temporary shelters at Samanthampettai with clean drinking water for about 100 families. The Mutt was also constructing anganwadis and community halls at Panangudi and Samanthampettai and would provide colour television sets and clean drinking water.
Immediate action
Abhayamrita Chaitanya said a group of volunteers from Coimbatore, Chennai and Kochi and student volunteers from the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham started relief work in the affected areas a few days after the tsunami struck. A full-fledged medical team from the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Kochi, consisting of seven doctors and five paramedical staff, toured the coastal areas and attended to more than 300 patients every day. The volunteers visited Velankanni and distributed rice, dhal, edible oil, tea and other items to 100.
