`State trying to create fear psychosis among devotees'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 12. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad today alleged that the State Government was trying to create a ``fear psychosis'' among devotees and supporters of the Kanchi Mutt by issuing summons to them ``in the name of questioning for cases relating to the Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.''

``The latest example in this regard was the summons issued by the special investigation team to me this morning,'' S. Vedantam, national vice-president of the VHP, told presspersons here. Several eminent persons were said to have been summoned by the police as they had supported the mutt activities in one way or the other, he added.

He said the summons were served on him at the VHP headquarters at T. Nagar at 7.30 a.m. on Wednesday, asking him to appear before the Additional Superintendent of Police, S.P. Sakthivel, at the investigation bungalow at Kancheepuram at 11 a.m.

Mr. Vedantam refused to obey the directive, as, he said, it was not as per law.

Besides, it was not possible for him to be at Kancheepuram at the time specified by the police.

``We are willing to cooperate with the authorities provided the police functions in accordance with law.''

The Government continued to insult the sentiments of Hindus and this was evident the way the junior Sankaracharya, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, was arrested.

According to Mr. Vedantam, when they went to arrest the seer, the police officials entered the mutt, wearing shoes.

BJP demands

dismissal

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party State general secretary, H. Raja, said his party demanded the dismissal of the State Government as it was functioning in a ``vindictive manner'' and with an eye on minority votes and by relying on the support of ``atheist forces.''
