THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 15. A national testing centre for quality control of medical equipment will soon be set up at the bio-medical engineering wing of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Science and Technology (SCTIMST) at Poojappura, the institute director, K. Mohandas, has said.
Central grant
Addressing a meet-the-press programme here on Friday, Dr. Mohandas said that a Central Government grant of Rs. 85 crores was being provided to SCTIMST for the proposed quality control centre, which will be the first of its kind in South Asia, and for setting up tissue and stem cell research.
ISO certification
The institute had recently secured ISO 17025 certification, he said. Dr. Mohandas said the institute was developing a new heart valve using titanium, which would be MRI scan-compatible and would be marketed only after conducting extensive clinical trials.
