More time for job registration

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 15. The Government has decided to allow time till March 31 to job seekers in the coastal taluks to renew their registration in the employment exchange. Those who had been dismissed from jobs obtained through the employment exchange after October 1 but could not include their discharge certificate will also be given discharge certificates with seniority till March 31. The application forms under the KESRU self-employment scheme will be distributed till February 18 and the completed forms would be accepted till February 28. Those who had collected the application forms earlier but had lost them would be given fresh forms..

Bamboo for Andamans

Kerala has decided to provide 50,000 bamboo poles free for the rehabilitation of the tsunami victims in the Andaman and Nicobar Island. The decision has been taken on a plea by the Chief Secretary of the islands. The Government has asked the Forest Department to procure the poles and send it to Chennai port for onward shipment to the islands. The loading, unloading and transportation cost will be met by the Forest Department. The expenditure for the purpose has been exempted from the treasury restrictions, according to the Forest Minister, K.P. Viswanathan.

Age limit for jobs opposed

The NGO Centre has come out against the Administrative Reforms Committee's recommendation to fix the upper age for Government jobs at 25 years. The State secretary of the centre, C. Sadanandan, said today that it would adversely affect lakhs of educated unemployed of the State. He asked the Government to reject the recommendation for dismissing inefficient and corrupt employees.

Honour for painter

KOZHIKODE JAN. 15. Francis Kodankandath, painter and winner of the National Akademi Award, has been invited to participate in the 11th Triennial exhibition in New Delhi. The event, which was inaugurated today by the Union Minister for Communications, Jaipal Reddy, would be on till February 10. Artists from 35 countries are taking part in the programme. Mr. Francis Kodankandath, superintendent in Customs and Excise Department, won the Lalithakala Akademi last year for his painting `Restoration Within.'

Youth fete logo released

T.P.M. Saheer, MLA, released the logo of the Eighth State Higher Secondary Youth Festival being organised in Kozhikode from February 7 to 9, at a programme here today. The Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, presided over the meeting. The logo has been conceptualised by Santosh Chirakkara, art tutor at Venereni Girls Higher Secondary School, Feroke.

NIT-C team wins quiz

KOCHI JAN. 15. Praveen V.R. and Manjith K. of National Institute of Technology, Calicut, have won the KRL all-Kerala inter-collegiate quiz competition organised by Kochi Refineries Limited here on Saturday as part of the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight observance. Rohit C.J. and Sandeep Menon of Model Engineering College, Ernakulam and Rajashekhar R. and Rahul Girish Kumar of Government Engineering College, Thrissur, came second and third.

Sharad Pawar

puts off visit

The Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar, who was scheduled to visit Kerala from January 22 to 25, has postponed the trip to February, as he will accompany the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, on a visit to the tsunami-hit areas on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the general secretary of the NCP, T.P. Peethambaran Master has informed.

PATHANAMTHITTA JAN. 15. The former Supreme Court Judge, K. T. Thomas, will deliver the eighth Elanthoor C. T. Mathai commemoration speech at the YMCA Hall at Elanthoor near Kozhencherry tomorrow. Rajan Babu, MLA, will present the education awards instituted in the name of the late C. T. Mathai on the occasion.

Religious meet

The annual religious convention of the India Pentecostal Church (IPC) will begin at the Kumbanad Hebronpuram near Thiruvalla tomorrow. The IPC president, T. S. Abraham, will inaugurate the week-long meet at 6 p.m. tomorrow. The convention concludes on January 23.

Pappachan, who is also chairman of the Legal Services Authority, Thiruvananthapuram, on Friday. The services of two women advocates will be made available at the clinic on the second and fourth Fridays of every month for students and staff.

Open to public

The library attached to the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram, located in GPO Lane, Statue, has been thrown open to the public for reference. Books on history, economics, culture, politics and ancient Indian sciences as well as current publications are available here, according to a press release.

Film fete

The Chalachitra Film Society is organising a three-day festival of Polish films at the Kalabhavan Theatre from January 18.
