K.J. Thomas is CPI(M) Kottayam district secretary

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, JAN. 15. The district conference of the CPI(M) concluded with an impressive red volunteer march and a public meeting at Pala today.

The conference also marked a change of guard with the former MLA and district chief of CITU, K.J. Thomas, who has so far been a member of the district secretariat, being elected as the district secretary of the party. With this, the long innings by Vaikom Viswan, who had been at the helm for 20 years, has ended. Mr. Viswan had expressed his willingness to step down owing to health reasons. Mr. Thomas was chosen by the newly-elected district committee. The conference elected a 35-member district committee.

Two members who find themselves out of the new committee are P.N. Sarasammal, who was defeated in the election, and P.N. Moosath, whose name was not included in the panel. The four new faces in the committee are P.K. Biju, K.M. Radhakrishnan, K. Anil Kumar, M.K. Prabhakaran.
