Vijayakumar re-elected CPI(M) district secretary

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 15. The four-day district conference of the CPI(M) drew to a close here today with a massive rally. The conference re-elected the former Kerala Assembly Speaker, M. Vijayakumar, as district secretary.

The conference also elected a 43-member district committee, adding four new members, and picked 34 persons to represent the district in the CPI(M) State conference slated to be held in Malappuram in the third week of February. All the elections were unanimous.

The rally marking the conclusion of the district conference saw hundreds of party workers from different pats of Thiruvananthapuram converging at the Putharikkandam Maidan in what turned out to be a show of strength by the party. Traffic was thrown haywire as the party workers, most of them carrying the red flag, marched in from different corners of the city.

Inaugurating the conference, the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, came down heavily on the media for its focused attack on the party and asserted that the CPI(M) would emerge from the Malappuram conference a more cohesive political force. He also took strong exception to the NSS-SNDP Yogam unity moves and said the call for Hindu unity was nothing but a ruse to bring together various Hindu communities under the RSS flag.
