Major clash averted
By Our Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM,
JAN. 18.
Police averted a major clash between two groups from Kalanjikuppam in Villupuram district and Karaianputhur in Pondicherry today. Thousands had gathered here to witness the Theerthavari festival at the South Pennaiyar, for which scores of idols from various temples in the vicinity had been brought to the banks of the river. What started as a wordy duel between two groups soon led to fisticuffs. The strong posse of policemen posted there chased away the clashing groups. One group reportedly took away an idol, but it was immediately recovered.
