KANCHEEPURAM, JAN. 19. The Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I, G. Uthamaraj, remanded the junior Kanchi Acharya, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, to judicial custody, after a 24-hour police custody expired this evening. He ordered that Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi be produced before the court for routine remand extension on January 24. The court had yesterday ordered police custody for the junior Acharya up to 5 p.m. today. When the Magistrate asked whether he was being treated well during the police custody period, the Acharya replied in the affirmative. He made a submission that the prison authorities be directed to enable him to avail himself of Ayurvedic treatment for neck pain. The Acharya was later lodged in the Chennai Central Prison. Before getting into a police vehicle, he told reporters that the Sankararaman murder case was foisted on the Mutt and there was "not even one percent truth" in the case. "We will get released legally and `Bharatham' (the country) will get a fresh lease of life," he said.
Remand extended
The magistrate extended judicial custody for `Kaladi' Viswanatha Iyer, the Kanchi Mutt accountant. He was arrested in connection with the case of "tampering with the Mutt accounts," filed by the special investigation team probing the murder case. When Mr. Viswanatha Iyer was produced in the court today, the Magistrate informed him that his judicial custody was being extended up to February 2.
