A dip to instil confidence

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, JAN. 19 . To reassure fisherfolk, who are reluctant to venture into the sea after the December 26 tsunami strike, three ministers bathed in the sea near the Azhikkaal beach in Kanyakumari district today.

Accompanied by the Azhikkaal parish priest, Rev. Fr. Stanley Sahayam, and officials, the Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, the Minister for Electricity and Transport, Natham R. Viswanathan, and the Minister for Food, Pollaachchi Jayaraman, bathed in the sea for 10 minutes to instil confidence in the minds of fishermen.

Meeting fishermen

Mr. Thalavai Sundaram met some of the fishermen families living in the temporary shelters. He also lunched with a family of Robert and Jayanthi. When Mr. Robert told the minister that he was yet to venture into the sea, Mr. Thalavai Sundaram encouraged him to resume his business at the earliest.

"Since the Government has made elaborate arrangements to get vital information from some of the developed nations about natural calamities, fishermen would be alerted," he said.

He later distributed 900 stoves worth Rs. 2 lakh to the affected fishermen.
