Assam Government transfers two police officials

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, JAN. 27. The Assam Government today transferred the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kamrup (Metropoiltan) for ``security lapses'' in the wake of twin blasts at Judges Field, venue of the ceremonial parade during the Republic Day ceremony yesterday.

Two Government employees were injured in the blasts which occurred at the high security zone of parade ground few minutes after the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, arrived at the venue and the Governor, Lt. Gen. (retired) Ajai Singh, got ready to inspect the guard of honour.

The Government also decided to re-designate the post of SP (City) as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and create two additional posts of SP (Traffic) and SP (Special Operation Unit) for better functioning of the city police.

The present DC (Kamrup), Sameer Sinha, has been appointed the new DC, Kamrup (Metropolitan), who will replace A.K. Absar Hazarika, who has been transferred as Joint Secretary, Home and Political. The present SP, Kokrajhar, Vijay Ramisetti, has been appointed as the SSP (City). The present city SP, H.C. Nath, has been transferred as SP (Special Branch, General).

The decisions were taken at an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers held here tonight. Briefing reporters after the meeting, the Minister of State for Home, Rockybul Hussain, said Jitmol Doley had been appointed SP (SOU, city) and Luis Aind SP (Traffic).

The meeting, which reviewed the law and order situation in the wake of the blasts, concluded that there was a prima facie ``security lapse'' on the part of the police and civil administration of the city, according to a Minister. He also said the Council congratulated the police and district administrations for foiling attempts by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) to sabotage Republic Day celebrations.

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), however, demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister for the ``failure to check extremist violence and for deteriorating law and order situation.'' The AGP president, Brindaban Goswami, alleged: ``Mr. Gogoi had passed the buck on to police and districts to cover up his own failure.''
