Court directive to Gaya SP

By K. Balchand

PATNA, JAN. 27. The Patna High Court today directed the Gaya Superintendent of Police to procure a fresh arrest warrant against the former Rashtriya Janata Dal Minister and Belaganj constituency candidate, Surendra Prasad Yadav, and execute it by next Tuesday. A Division Bench, headed by the acting Chief Justice, Nagendra Rai, directed the Gaya District Judge to ensure that the fresh warrant was issued when he reported that the previous one had not reached the police due to postal vagaries.

The High Court had called for the report when it learnt that the police had not arrested Mr. Yadav when he filed his nomination paper.

The Bench also directed the Chief Electoral Officer, K. C. Saha, to inform the court of the steps taken to ensure the safety of candidates in the naxalite-affected areas.

It also hoped that the candidates would notify their visits to the respective DSPs.

`Party nominees targeted'

The Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union Steel Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, said that a party delegation would call on the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and express concern over the manner in which the party nominees were being targeted in the State.

The Minister alleged that the party nominee in Atri, Ranjit Singh, was attacked at the behest of the ruling party in the State.
