Congress expels rebel candidates in Haryana
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
JAN. 27.
The Congress today expelled several partymen for six years with immediate effect, with over 30 of them refusing to withdraw their candidatures against the official candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections.
While announcing this here, sources claimed that the party was planning to adopt a carrot-and-stick policy and hoped to have only about a dozen rebel candidates on election-day.
The decision was announced by the All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Haryana, Janardan Dwivedi, this evening after the close of withdrawal of nominations for the February 3 election. At the same time, efforts are on to persuade some of them to withdraw their candidatures.
The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, will tour Haryana on Friday and Saturday; covering Panipat, Kurukshetra, Rewadi, Gurgaon and Bhiwani districts. She will be accompanied by the veteran Congressman, Motilal Vora. She will address rallies on Monday in Bihar and Jharkhand where some districts go to the polls on February 3.
