Maths talent hunt

NEW DELHI JAN. 29. Manav Sthali School at New Rajendra Nagar organised its 21st Annual All-India Inter-School Maths Talent Test 2004 in the school premises on Saturday. About 1,800 students from 53 prestigious schools of Delhi participated in the test. Through the talent test an opportunity is provided to students of different schools to excel in mathematics. It has also served as a platform to students who want to appear for the examinations held at the national and international level in mathematics.

According to the director of the school, Mamta V. Bhatnagar, over 29,000 students have participated in the talent test since 1984.

Nirankari Mission's gesture

NEW DELHI JAN. 29. The Sant Nirankari Mission has donated Rs. 21 lakhs to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of the tusami victims in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and other parts of the country. The cheque was presented to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, by a delegation on January 19. The delegation informed that the Mission volunteers have been working in close coordination with the local authorities in different parts of the country ever since the tsunami struck.

Technology workshops

NEW DELHI JAN. 29. The Ansal Institute of Technology in Gurgaon has been conducting various technology workshops and value added courses for its students to equip them for effective and suitable placements. In this direction, a personality development programme was conducted for AIT students on its campus by experts from the U.K. recently. It was a two-week programme covering a variety of topics like effective communication, motivation, leadership, confidence building, time management, anger management, focusing etiquettes and personal hygiene. Such programmes are conducted in small batches of 20 students to make it more effective and interactive.

Awarded President's medal

NEW DELHI JAN. 29. Mr. Yashvant Malhotra, a 1975 batch Bihar cadre IPS officer, of Sashastra Seema Bal was awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service on the eve of Republic Day. Mr. Malhotra has served in different capacities in the State police, CBI, CISF and SSB. In a distinguished career spanning 29 years, he has handled inter-border crimes, communal violence and other law and order situations.

School's new building inaugurated

NEW DELHI JAN. 29. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, has described education as the most important development agent and also the best tool for empowerment of people.

He was addressing a gathering of students and parents after inaugurating a new building of St. Thomas School at Indirapuram in Ghaziabad on Thursday.

"If our schools fail in their task of producing responsible citizens, healthy survival of our society would be at risk. Seeds of responsible citizens are sown at the school level,'' the Speaker said.

The programme was presided over by the Job Mar Philoxenos of St. Thomas' Orthodox Church.
