NEW DELHI, JAN. 29. Another employee of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a racket in illegal sale of medicines meant only for the Institute. Three AIIMS employees and two chemists have already been arrested earlier on similar charges. The accused, Rattan Lal, works as a sweeper at AIIMS. The Vigilance Section of the South-West Delhi police found that he was roped in by a senior pharmacist, Radhey Shyam, and the AIIMS dispensary in-charges, Ram Kishan and Parveen, to pilfer medicines supplied to the hospital, for sale in the open market. Earlier this month, the police had arrested a chemist, Ramupal, and recovered from him a huge consignment of medicines, including life saving drugs, meant only for use by AIIMS. At his instance, the police then arrested Radhey Shyam the two dispensary in-charges. Further probe revealed the involvement of another chemist named Nardev Sharma, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase III in East Delhi. He was arrested subsequently. During interrogation, he disclosed that he had been supplying medicines received from Ramupal to his clients based in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. It is learnt that police teams had been sent to track down some of his clients in Agra and other nearby places. While a probe is on to verify the involvement of some other AIIMS employees, more arrests in the case might be affected soon.
