Carjackers nabbed after exchange of fire

By Our Staff Reporter

Three members of a gang of carjackers -- Nasruddin, Pappan Kasana and Sanjay - being produced before the media on Saturday after their arrest on Friday.

NEW DELHI, JAN. 29. Three alleged carjackers were arrested following a brief exchange of fire with the police at Sangam Vihar in South Delhi this Friday. While they have reportedly confessed to their involvement in 43 cases of carjacking, the police have so far recovered four stolen vehicles at their instance.

A Special Staff team led by Inspector Rajender Singh recently received a tip-off that some carjackers would come from Agra in a stolen vehicle to commit a robbery here on Friday. Subsequently, the police laid a trap on Pul Prahladpur border and tried to intercept the car in which the suspects were moving.

Realising that the police were after them, one of the occupants, later identified as Nasruddin, is said to have opened fire at them. The police also fired in retaliation and managed to overpower him along two of his accomplices, Pappan Kasana and Sanjay. Two pistols and a live cartridge were recovered from their possession.

During interrogation, Nasruddin claimed to be the gang leader and said he was involved in several cases of carjacking and robbery in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Delhi. Over the past few months, his gang members had stolen at least seven Maruti cars, a Santro, a Honda City, a Mitsubishi Lancer, a tractor and several motorcycles. At their instance, the police have recovered the stolen Lancer, the tractor and a Maruti car.

The police said Nasruddin's four other accomplices -- Israel, Hanif, James Messy and Ata-ur-Rehman -- were arrested by the Special Staff earlier this month. Further investigations are on.

In another case, the North-West Delhi police arrested two auto-lifters, Vikrant and Suraj Bhan, from Ashok Vihar and recovered four stolen motorcycles at their instance. Vikrant is pursuing graduation from the Delhi University's correspondence college, while Suraj runs a shop at Shraddhanand Colony.
