THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 3. Raman Sreevastava today took charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) at the Police Headquarters here. During a chat with presspersons after assuming office, he said that top priority would be given to reduce the response time of the police. The response should be immediate and effective irrespective of whether it was in the area of law and order or traffic, he said. He said that his first task would be to make the police people-friendly. The force should be sympathetic to the needs of the public. He also wanted the police to pay special attention to the problems of women and children. Public men would be given a hearing, as it was the problems of the people that they raised. He declined to comment on the ISRO espionage case on the ground that the CBI and the Supreme Court had closed it. Asked about corruption, he said that it would be curbed at all levels. Honesty, service mentality and discipline would be strengthened. He would also take steps for the welfare of the members of the force. He said that he was starting on a clean slate as he was away from the force for the last five years. He would be embarking on a visit of the districts soon to interact with the people and identify the problems at the grassroots level. He paid rich tributes to the Kerala Police. He described it as a good force in fine condition, the morale of which was high and which was functioning brilliantly. He was proud to be the member of such a force. His endeavour would be to improve its image further.
