IUML reiterates demand
Thiruvananthapuram
Feb. 3.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today reiterated its demand for the early implementation of the Narendran Commission report. The party's uncompromising stand was conveyed to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today by a IUML delegation, headed by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs Minister and IUML all-India general secretary, E Ahamed, the party State general secretary, P.K. Kunhalikutty, and the Industry Minister, E.K. Ebrahim Kunju. The meeting assumes importance in the context of the Assembly debate on the commission report slated for February 10. Mr. Ahamed, later, called on the veteran Congress leader, K. Karunakaran. Mr. Ahamed reportedly discussed the current political developments with Mr. Karunakaran though his visit was officially termed as courtesy call.
Award for journalist
Malayinkeezhu Gopalakrishnan, Special Correspondent, Matrubhumi Daily, has been chosen for this year's `Vayanapuraskaram' for his book `Keralam Lokacharithrathilude'. He was chosen for the award by members of Vayana, an organisation of book lovers, from among 37 works. The award would be presented to Mr. Gopalakrishnan at a function to be held in the State capital in the first week of March.
CPI donates Rs. 20 lakhs
The State CPI has donated Rs. 20 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund to provide relief to the victims of the tsunami disaster. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, and the assistant secretary, Panniyan Ravindran, handed over the amount, collected from party members and sympathisers, to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today.
IRE's contribution
The Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Rare Earths Limited (IRE), T.K. Mukherjee, handed over a cheque for Rs. 25 lakhs to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, here today as IRE's contribution to the rehabilitation of the people who lost their houses and fishing equipment due to the tsunami. He also conveyed to the Chief Minister the IRE's willingness to buy the land owned by persons interested in rehabilitation as per guidance from the Government. The Directors of IRE, S. Sivasubramanian and V.K. Verma, and the Executive Director of Chavara plant, K.R. Nair, were also present. The IRE has been participating in the relief activities in the tsunami-affected Alappad panchayat area as per the directives of the District Collector from the day of the tragedy. It has spent about Rs. 7 lakhs directly to date.
Chandy violated discipline: Jacob

The Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader, T. M. Jacob, has accused the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, of having violated the discipline expected from partners in a coalition. Mr. Jacob told presspersons on Thursday that the decision to ban the State lotteries was not discussed in the United Democratic Front (UDF). ``A particular party does not constitute the UDF. Apart from allies, a section of the Congress too resent Mr. Chandy's authoritarian ways. Mr. Chandy had reduced the number of ministerial seats for constituents by two, without discussing the issue in the UDF,'' Mr. Jacob said. He said that the Kerala Congress (Jacob) had no plan to leave the UDF. ``Mr. Chandy and a section of the Congress alone do not constitute the front.'' Asked about a possible tie-up with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mr. Jacob said there were no permanent friends or foes in politics.

found dead
ERODE
FEB. 3.
An automobile engineering student was found dead in a room in Perundurai taluk near here on Monday. The police have identified the deceased as Shan Habeeb, a native of Alappuzha in Kerala. He was studying in the Chemical Technology College, a private institution, at Naduppatty in Perundurai. He was staying in a hostel and left it after a roommate complained that Rs. 700 kept in the room was missing. Habeeb reportedly admitted to have taken it and left the hostel after repaying it. Later, he was staying with three other students of some other colleges at Perundurai. When they returned from college on Monday evening, Habeeb was found hanging and they informed the police. Investigations were on, the police said.

A.L. Sreenivasan has been elected for a two-year term as president of the Nadar Sanghom, an educational and charitable institution. He was elected at the general body meeting of the organisation.
Photo exhibition
The field exhibition unit of the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) is organising a seven-day photo exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi's life and vision. The field exhibition officer, Kavitha Martin, said the show would be held at Veluthampi Dalava Samskarika Nilayam at Elampallur near here from February 4 to 10.

Playback singer Sujatha and tabla player Sudheer Kadalundi have been selected for the Raju Pilakkad award instituted by Shabdam Kadalundi. The award carries a gold coin and a citation. The awards will be presented at a programme to be held at Kadalundi on March 6.
Scouts rally
This year's district rally organised by the Bharat Scouts and Guides District Association will begin at the Zamorin Higher Secondary School (HSS) from Friday. C. Sasindran, rally coordinator, and T.N. Abraham, district secretary, told mediapersons here on Wednesday that more than 1,000 scouts and guides from various educational institutions in the district will attend the rally.
Science prize
The J.C. Bose Science Award, instituted by the Kerala Botany Teachers Association at the State level, has been bagged by Merin Eapen of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Thrissur. The association office-bearers told mediapersons here today that K. Anwar of HYM HSS, Manjeri, stood second and D. Jayadev of St. Thomas HSS won the third prize.
