Head of Missionaries of Charity arrives in city

By Our Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY, FEB. 5. The Mother-General of Missionaries of Charity, Nirmala, arrived here at the Cochin International Airport on Saturday. Nuns from the Missionaries of Charity convents in Ernakulam received her.

Talking to presspersons at the airport, she said it was a privilege and a huge responsibility to be the successor of the saintly legacy left behind by Mother Teresa. She would continue god's work as her predecessor had done.

"My first visit to Kerala was in November 1975," she said. This visit was the first after taking charge as Mother-General.

During her 12-day stay, she will visit the 11 convents of the Missionaries of Charity in the State.

Sr. Nirmala said she would also visit the tsunami-hit areas in the State where members of the Missionaries of Charity were actively participating in relief and rehabilitation operations. Nuns from the organisation were working to help the affected people in Kollam and Karunagappally.

She said the sphere of activity of the Missionaries of Charity had expanded over the years. At the time of Mother Teresa's death, there were 594 convents, which had since then increased to 722, she added.

God loved Kerala, the God's own country, the Mother General said in her message to Keralites. She urged people to love and trust one another and have faith in god. At the airport, she was received by nuns from the convents of Ernakulam, Pookattupady, Mattanchery, Chellanam and Manakkodam. Anjeletta of Ernakulam convent said the Mother- General would be accorded a reception at the Ernakulam Regional House this evening. She will return on February 17.
