Goa politics

Sir, — The Speaker is the final authority to decide on the disqualification of an MLA. Technically, the Goa Assembly Speaker cannot be faulted for not allowing an independent member to vote on the confidence motion.

Abhishek Tiwari,
Jabalpur, M.P.

Sir, — The BJP claims the dismissal of the Manohar Parrikar Government was unconstitutional. Was the manner in which the vote of confidence was conducted constitutional?

The Constitution should be amended to stipulate that a committee of judges and eminent persons will choose persons for posts such as Speaker and Governor.

S.T. Daniel,
Mumbai

Sir, — It is time we made changes in appointments to constitutional posts. The Speaker-designate should be made to resign from the political party to which he or she belongs. As for Governors, it is enough if our policy-makers implement the Sarkaria Commission report in letter and in spirit. India's image as the world's largest democracy is at stake.

Marrapu Naveen,
Hyderabad
