Letters to the Editor
Sir, The photograph showing handcuffed undertrial Mukesh Kumar Yadav filing his nomination from the Patna West Assembly constituency and the report, "Many facing criminal charges in fray" (Feb. 5) are disturbing. The law should be amended to prevent candidates facing criminal charges from contesting elections till they are acquitted.
P. Lalitha,
* * * Sir, One wonders what kind of democracy we have. Are we short of people facing no criminal charges? Are they reluctant to enter politics? Who is responsible for such a situation?
T. Rengaswamy,
* * * Sir, Though legally permissible, the sight of a handcuffed candidate filing his nomination papers crosses all limits of democratic norms.
R. Thirunarayanan,
* * * Sir, The photo bears testimony to the fact that where there is a will, there is a way; where there is a way, there is a law; and where there is a law, there must be a loophole.
Soundara Subramanian,
