Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is difficult to agree entirely with the views expressed in the editorial, "No arms for Nepal" (Feb. 5). India has to bear realpolitik in mind. If foreign policy decisions were to be based entirely on idealism, there should be no efforts at a rapprochement with Pakistan, no trade with Myanmar, and no strategic dialogue with China. Let us not forget that the success of the Maoists in Nepal has serious implications for India.
Suren Mohan,
* * * Sir, The Maoist insurgency has cross-border security implications. Nepal should seek India's help to tackle the issue jointly. King Gyanendra should hold an immediate dialogue with Nepal's political leaders and find ways to restore multi-party democracy.
Y. Jagannatham,
* * * Sir, King Gyanendra's usurpation of power may be the best chance for Nepal to resolve its struggle with the Maoists. As for India, it is clearly in a dilemma. If it supports King Gyanendra, it will amount to legitimising his rule. If it opposes him, it might indirectly help the Maoists.
Ashish S. Thakare,
* * * Sir, The imposition of Emergency by King Gyanendra in Nepal and the curtailing of rights of the people and the media are undemocratic. Besides the journalists of Nepal, who are putting up a spirited fight against the King's move, the international community, particularly India and the U.S., should respond in defence of democracy and civil rights.
V. Sai Kiran,
