Quality `holds key in competitive environment'

CHENNAI, FEB. 8. The chief executive and managing director, Lucas-TVS, T.K. Balaji, today received the Vocational Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Madras.

Receiving the award, Mr. Balaji said that with the distinction between domestic and global economy vanishing, there was a need to operate in global terms. "In a competitive environment, quality is the entry ticket," he said.

N.K. Gopinath, president, Rotary Club, presented the award and a citation which said that Mr. Balaji "sincerely believes in motivating employees to think critically, to be expressive, to justify opinions and to be creative."

B.G. Kukillaya, director, Vocational Service, and Indra Subramanyam, honorary secretary, Rotary Club, participated.

At another function in the city, industrialist P. Obul Reddy received the `For the Sake of Honour Award' from the Rotary Club of Ambattur.

Presenting the award to Mr. Reddy, the former Governor of Orissa, M.M. Rajendran, said that for the country to progress, reinventing governance was very important. Accountability was an important factor in a democracy. "Everybody in the country, even the Governor or the apex court, is accountable, to either the people or the Constitution framed by the people's body."

R. Thyagarajan, chairman of the Shriram Group of Companies, said Mr. Reddy could not be underestimated. N. Murali, Joint Managing Director of The Hindu , hailed Mr. Reddy as a great industrialist and philanthropist, and a keen lover of Carnatic music. He espoused social causes, promotion of music and fine arts and community welfare.

Rekha Shetty, past district governor of the Rotary Club, said Mr. Reddy played an important role in raising the image of his country to great heights.

Mr. Reddy (in a speech read out by a Rotarian) commended the services rendered by the Rotary Club of Ambattur and announced a donation of Rs. 2 lakhs to the club to carry out its educational, health and other welfare activities.

P.S. Seshadri, Rotary president, Mohan Sasikumar, director, Vocational Service; S.L. Omprakash, secretary; D. Seshadri, chairman, awards committee; and Satyan Bhat, past president, took part.

The citation referred to Mr. Reddy's contribution in perpetuating Saint Thyagaraja's kritis and to spiritual and religious causes transcending caste, colour, creed and religion.
