Flyovers `can ease traffic flow' in T. Nagar, Kodambakkam

CHENNAI, FEB. 8. Construction of flyovers and over-bridges at important road junctions is the solution to the traffic congestion in T. Nagar and Kodambakkam, say residents.

Participating in a meet organised by the T. Nagar Zone Exnora today, residents said that a mini-flyover connecting North Usman Road, Kodambakkam junction, Panagal Park and Doraiswamy Road junction was essential. Another one was needed to connect G.N. Chetty Road and Thirumalai Pillai Road, they said.

Exnora members and representatives of residents' welfare associations from Mambalam, T. Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Trustpuram, Kodambakkam and Vadapalani took part in the discussion of civic problems and the status of various projects.

On construction of a flyover in Rangarajapuram, R. Govindaraj, Exnora International joint general secretary, said the project had been pending for over eight years. Though it was due to be started in January, there had not been much progress. With many such projects being stalled, residents suffered. He also pointed out the need for an overhead tank for Mambalam, which was suffering from a water crisis for several years.

The Exnora International chairman, M.B. Nirmal, called for the construction of a multi-storeyed parking lot in T. Nagar. Traffic regulation in Pondy Bazaar, Brindavan Street and Arya Gowda Road junction was also suggested.

Mr. Govindaraj proposed that a temple in the middle of Ellaiamman Koil Street be shifted to ease traffic congestion and that slum dwellers on Railway Border Road in T. Nagar, Valliammal Garden and Sherkhan Thottam in Kodambakkam be resettled elsewhere.

A member of the Madley Road Welfare Association, T. Nagar, demanded the removal of encroachments on the footpath and declaring the service road as a non-parking area. Mambalam residents wanted encroachments on Mambalam High Road to be evicted to facilitate free movement of vehicles.

Another issue that dominated the discussion was the development of a vacant piece of land on 12th Avenue, Ashok Nagar, into a Corporation playground. B. Jayaraman, treasurer of the South Ashok Nagar Civic Exnora, said that though about Rs. 10 lakhs had been released from the MLA's fund to clear encroachments, Chennai Corporation was yet to take action. Exnora members charged that the land was being used as a makeshift dumping yard by the Corporation. T. Nagar residents suggested a pedestrian subway connecting Ranganathan Street and Station Road. .

The T. Nagar MLA, J. Anbazhagan, said that though funds had been sanctioned for several projects, the Government was yet to implement them. Councillors S.P. Chellamal, K.S. Mani and K. Maheswari also participated.
