Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 9. The South Central Railway Employees' Sangh Vijayawada division organised a protest demonstration and lunch-hour gate meeting in front of the DRM's Office here on Wednesday in response to a nation-wide call by the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR). Addressing the gate meeting, the Sangh's divisional secretary, M. Bhaskar Rao, said the protest programme was organised as per the directives of the Sangh's general secretary, M. Raghavaiah, and the NFIR's call. Mr. Rao said the Indian Government and the Ministry of Railways were adopting a "callous attitude" towards the problems of railwaymen. He pointed out that the Government arbitrarily reduced casual leave of employees and attempts were made to curtail the existing privileges enjoyed by the employees. The main demands of the railwaymen included merging 50 per cent of DA with basic pay from July, 2002, instead of April, 2004, lifting ban on recruitment, filling of vacant posts, withdrawing new contributory pension scheme and stopping surrendering of posts.
