Korada Vijaya Kumar

VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 9. The official apathy in solving the public grievances raised by him notwithstanding, the CPI (M) corporator from the 18th division has a strong reason to cheer about his nearly five-year-long second stint as the representative of the division in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

Unlike many corporators of his party as well as the other political parties, the 18th division corporator, K. Vijaya Kumar, can boast about several works that were taken up and completed during his tenure. A major portion of the road network in his division has been converted into either CC or BT roads. The street-lighting facilities have been improved with the mercury vapour lamps replacing the common tubelights in all major roads and residential areas of the division. The water pipelines have been strengthened while the drains and culverts have been repaired with an estimated cost of over Rs. 40 lakhs.

It is not that the officials have come forward to sanction and take up all the works demanded by the corporator, but being located in the heart of the city, the division has received the importance it required. "Whenever we approach them for some issues, the officials, as usual, want their word to be implemented and they rarely take cognisance of the problems raised by us," he says.

Moreover, given the limited number of seats the CPI(M) has in the corporation, it would become more difficult to convince the officials to take up some works, including those of urgent public importance. "But still I have managed to get a few things done during the last more than four years," he says with pride.
