Traffic snarls a bane

By M. Rajeev

The dug up Besant Road poses a problem to vehicle drivers as well as the pedestrians.

VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 9. Being one of the busiest commercial localities in the city, it obviously ensures all facilities for its residents. But life in commercial areas has its own problems.

This is precisely the situation of the residents of the 18th division, which has, among other things, Besant Road, the busiest commercial locality. The residents here have water, drainage, CC and BT roads in a major part of the division. And much to their relief, the dwellers of the lone slum in the locality have been relocated at the Vambay Colony leaving the residents with no scope to blame the slums for the ills, if any, they face.

The residents, represented by the CPI(M) in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, are ever faced with traffic snarls, thanks to the mushrooming businesses, accompanied by scores of pushcart vendors selling petty items and the continuous dumping of garbage.

Lack of cleanliness is not due to the negligence of the sanitation staff, who visit the area at least twice a day to clear the bins, but due to the continuous floating population that throngs the area every day.

While the garbage dumped by shopkeepers contributes to a significant chunk, petty businessmen and pushcart vendors throw no less quantity on the roads.

Craving for calm environs, the residents want the officials to at least streamline the flow of vehicles and ensure that there are no frequent traffic blockades.

This apart, the age-old drainage network spread irregularly throughout the division is another problem for the residents.
