Solemn start to Mary Matha festival

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 9. Gaiety and religious fervour marked commencement of the annual Mary Matha festival at Gunadala, on Wednesday.

The three-day religious carnival began with a holy mass conducted by the Bishop of Vijayawada, Mallavarapu Prakash, at the Gunadala Church.

The fact that the commencement of the carnival coincided with the `ash Wednesday' which denotes beginning of the 40 lent days preceding the Good Friday, contributed to an unexpected increase in the crowds.

Nearly 500 devotees, clad in white robes and a blue khanduva, attended the ceremonial mass.
