Weather

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2 degree Celsius and minimum of 17.7 degree Celsius on Wednesday. Humidity, which was recorded at 86 per cent in the morning, fell to 42 per cent in the evening.

Commodity rates

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Wednesday: Groundnut oil - 48.50, palmolein oil - 37, sunflower oil - 47.50, tamarind (flower variety) - 25 to 26, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 35 to 40, chillis (refrigerated) - 20 to 26, chillis - 18 to20, rice (2716) - 12, rice superfine - 13, Samba Masoori 14 to15, Sona Masoori - 16 to 17, black gram (pottu minapappu) - 18 to 24, red gram desavali (kandipappu) - 21, Pandiripalem - 22.50, Nagpur 25.

Liquor policy rapped

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) gave a call to the people to protest against the new liquor policy that would put their health and lives in jeopardy. The CPI(M) district secretary, V.Umamaheswara Rao, in a statement said the new liquor policy was against the spirit of promises made by the ruling party at the time of elections.

School's gesture

The students, staff and management of the Vijetha English Medium School, Machavaram Down, collected Rs 25,000 as aid for the tsunami victims. The director, A.Venkata Rao, and Principal, A Seshukumari, presented a demand draft for the amount to the district Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy.

`Improve hospital'

The Katragadda Venkata Narayana Memorial Trust chairman, Katragadda Babu, in an open letter to the district Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, urged him to take steps to improve the Government General Hospital as it was in a pathetic state. He alleged that the hospital had no medicines and doctors.
