dated February 11,1955: New Soviet Government

Mr. Georgi Malenkov, who on February 8 had resigned as the Soviet Prime Minister and was replaced by Marshal Bulganin, has been made a Deputy Prime Minister and given a new ministerial post. Marshal Georgi Zhukov fills Marshal Bulganin's post of Defence Minister in a reshuffle of Soviet Ministers announced at a joint session of the Supreme Soviet on February 9. Mr. Malenkov has been appointed Minister of Electro Stations (Power Stations), a position found for him by the dismissal of the previous Minister, Mr. Alexel Pavlenko. Marshal Georgi Zhukov, 58, the new Defence Minister, is noteworthy for the warm personal contacts he has had in the past with both President Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery. President Eisenhower, who met and liked the husky Russian shortly after the German surrender, is said to have remarked once: "This is a man with whom I could do business." The barrel-chested Soviet commander has been called the "Eisenhower of Russia" - as much for his ready grin as for his undoubted military genius. Cheerful and sociable, he established close relationships with his opposite numbers on the allied side immediately after World War Two, and has since shown signs of regret that the cold war ended these budding friendships.
