`Help Congress-backed candidates win'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, FEB. 10. The President of the Kodagu District Congress Committee (KDCC), Veena Achaiah, on Thursday called upon the presidents of the various block, hoblis and other units and cells of the party to work to ensure the victory of the Congress-backed candidates in the gram panchayat elections.

Speaking to presspersons here, Ms. Achaiah said the Congress-backed candidates were sure to re-establish supremacy in the panchayat elections slated for February 27 to repeat the earlier performance of the party in the district.

Candidates backed by the Congress were contesting in 1,213 seats in the 96 gram panchayats in the three taluks of the district. She said the Congress welcomed the support of all like-minded and secular parties and organisations willing to support its candidates in the panchayat elections.

Active workers could be accorded priority to various posts in the party organisational elections in March, she added.

Ms. Achaiah announced that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, was visiting Madikeri on February 14 to address a party workers meeting. The district-level coordination committees constituted recently to oversee party prospects in the elections would be headed by B.A. Jivijaya, MLA, in Somwarpet, the former Minister, M.M. Nanaiah in Madikeri, and another former Minister, Suma Vasant in Virajpet. T. John, former Minister, would be in charge of the district overall.

However, the Congress had heard of discrepancies in terms of reservations in a few gram panchayats, including Siddapur and Maldare in Virajpet taluk. Ms. Vasant said that there were no Scheduled Caste members in Bittangala near Virajpet, but the seat was reserved for Scheduled Caste members. It could lead to problems in future.

Cohesive unit

Mr. John said the party members who worked against the interests of the Congress by joining hands with candidates backed by other political parties in the elections would be viewed seriously. The party was a cohesive unit in Kodagu. Party leaders would resolve all differences to ensure the victory of the Congress-supported candidates in the elections, he added.

To a question, Mr. John said there was no pressure on the Congress to readmit certain rebel leaders and workers who had left the party in the past. Opinions of some people in the party to readmit the rebels should not be viewed as pressure on the party. The party High Command would act if there was genuine pressure to readmit the rebels.

The Vice-President of the Kodagu District Congress Committee and former Chairman of the Madikeri Urban Development Authority, B.K. Krishna, and the Kodagu District Congress Committee General Secretary, V.P. Suresh, were present.
