Several groups condemn killing of naxals

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, FEB. 10. Several organisations have condemned the killing of the two naxal leaders in an "encounter'' at Menasinahadya in Koppa taluk of Chikmagalur district on Sunday.

The Karnataka Vimochana Ranga, the Civil Liberties Forum, the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, the Mahila Jagruti, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti and the Vidyarthi Hitaraksha Vedike have termed it as "brutal murders".

In a statement here, these organisations said two women revolutionaries were killed in a fake encounter a year ago. The recent killing indicated the "fascist style of function of the Government", they said.

The statement said the losing of a "brilliant writer", Saketh Rajan, was a loss to pro-people struggles in the State.

"Though the means adopted by the naxalites to achieve their ends may not be justified, the ends themselves could not be found at fault as their concern for the ordinary and exploited sections of society is genuine,'' it added.

The statement observed that when this was the case, the Government should have taken note of the demands put forth by the naxalites and sorted them out amicably. It alleged that the Government was trying to put down the movement through fake encounters. The statement urged the Government to initiate a dialogue with naxal leaders without any loss of time.

Sri Basavaraj Devaru of the Revanasiddheshwar Mutt, K.L. Ashok, Convenor of the Karnataka Vimochana Ranga, Anilkumar of the Civil Liberties Forum, Gurumurthy of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Hemavathy of Mahila Jagruthi, K.T. Gangadhar of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Mallikarjun of Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Harshakumar, Bhaskar, Manjuladevi, Eesuru Lokesh and Rachappa have signed the statement.
