TUTICORIN, FEB. 10. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, instructed officials of the National Child Labour Project and revenue, municipal, and labour officials to intensify raids to identify child labourers in the district. Speaking at a one-day special meeting held here today to review the activities of the NCLP, he asked the municipal officials to take measures to cancel the licence of shops and other business establishments from where child workers were nabbed. M. Nallaperumal, Project Director, NCLP, was also present at the meeting.
Child labourers rescued
Later speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Nallaperumal said 339 child labourers had so far been rescued from various parts of the district since April 1, 2003. Of them, 26 were traced in January-February this year. ``The child workers were identified during raids conducted by the NCLP team, along with revenue, labour and police officials in match factories and industrial houses situated in the district'', he said.
Assistance
He said the Government had sanctioned financial assistance at the rate of Rs. 135 per child to 2,000 children studying in 40 special schools, to purchase uniforms. ``With the aid, polyester-combined white shirts and khaki shorts would be provided to 1,295 boys at the schools, while girls would be given blue skirt and blouses'', he added. About the plans to build a residential school for the rescued child labourers, Mr Nallaperumal said a site had been identified at Lingampatti near Kovilpatti and the work on the project would start soon.
