NAGERCOIL, FEB. 10. Members of the Air Force Wives' Welfare Association, led by Dr. Asha Savur, visited various tsunami-affected areas in Kanyakumari district on Thursday and handed over relief materials worth Rs. 2.50 lakhs to fisherfolk. Earlier, they had a discussion with the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, to be followed by a visit to a childcare centre at Asaripallam. When the children there expressed their desire to fly in an aeroplane, the team members assured that they would take steps to take them in a micro-light aircraft before month-end. They also distributed sweets and soft drinks to them. Meanwhile, the Kottar Social Service Society handed over 64 colour televisions and 7,000 plastic chairs to the Collector for distribution to the tsunami-affected fishermen families. The Collector said the Government had set up 3,529 temporary shelters at about 34 places for the fisherfolk who lost their houses to the tsunami. The Government has been implementing various development programmes for tsunami victims. The district administration has identified nine mentally challenged persons, 239 physically handicapped and 71 widows in tsunami-hit areas. Psychosocial counselling was being provided to them. The `Sevai Illam' at Thuckalay would take care of teenage girls and give them vocational training. As part of a long-term plan, the Public Works Department has sought approval for constructing groynes at an estimated cost of Rs. 51 crores and for building rubble-mounted sea walls on an outlay of Rs. 53.75 crores in the coastal areas of the district. Fishermen in the district had been demanding a fishing harbour at Thengapattinam for long, absence of which has led to tension with their counterparts in Kerala. Hence, the district administration has sent a Rs. 39.70-crore proposal to the Government for constructing a fishing harbour.
