KRISHNAGIRI, FEB. 10. The much-awaited inner ring road project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the industrial town of Hosur is expected to take off as all problems in the expansion of the road have finally been sorted out. With the work over in nearly 7.5 km out of the total 8.3 km, the project would be completed within the next few months, the Collector, Mangat Ram Sharma, said. The 100-feet road was initially sanctioned in 1986 at an estimated outlay of Rs. 75 lakhs to reduce congestion and give a facelift to Hosur. With Hosur being the border for the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, all vehicles from these States had to pass through Hosur leading to frequent traffic jams. On an average, about 20,000 light and heavy motor vehicles pass through Hosur. As a result a project was formulated to lay an inner ring road on the outskirts of the town, which would not only pave the way for the entry of vehicles outside town limits but also reduce traffic congestion and road accidents. Around 18 hectares of land was acquired by the district administration. Out of this around 6 hectares of land was with the TNEB, SIPCOT, Railways and Housing Board. Later, the project estimate was revised to Rs. 1.9 crores in 1993. With the majority of the road laying work completed, the project was shelved due to non-settlement of funds to the Government agencies for acquiring the land. According to the president of the Hosur Passengers and Social Welfare Association, N. Balakrishnan, "as the project didn't take off, there were no takers for the housing plots on the left side of the road." But the project gained momentum after it was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister who ordered the departments concerned to expedite the work immediately. The road on completion would connect the NH 7, Tali Hosur road, Hosur Denkanikottai road, Hosur Rayakottai road and the road near the Chandrachoodeswarar temple. As per the latest estimates, about Rs. 11 crores was required for expansion of the road, which includes the land cost to be paid to the agencies. A sum of Rs.1 crore had already been allotted for the work. Tenders had been floated and the work is expected to be over within the next few months.
