VELLORE, FEB. 10. The State Government should perform free sex change operations in government hospitals for aravanis (eunuchs), C. Gnanasekharan, MLA, said on Thursday. At a workshop on "Problems and issues in the lives of aravanis" organised by Women Hands in Education, Empowerment and Learning (WHEEL), Mr. Gnanasekharan said he had even raised the issue in Assembly. Houses should be constructed free for eunuchs who should be given self-employment loans. The District Social Welfare Officer, Saroja Thiruvengadam, said loans should be given to eunuchs to set up a Subscriber Trunk Dialling booth in the Collectorate. They could be encouraged to conduct cultural programmes on AIDS awareness. The Deputy Director of Health Services, Vellore, A. Somasundaram appealed to eunuchs to use condoms to prevent AIDS.
