U.S. push to raise fund

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, FEB. 10. The Bush administration will Congress for $950 millions for tsunami relief making the U.S. the single largest donor to countries in the Indian Ocean that are still recovering from the December 26, 2004 disaster.

"We will use these resources to provide assistance and to work with the affected nations on rebuilding vital infrastructure that re-energises economies and strengthens societies," said the President, George W Bush.

The U.S. first started with a promise of a mere $15 millions which was soon raised to $350 millions.

The latest commitment is part of the $81 billion supplemental that is heading to Capitol Hill to cover for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, Alan Larson, has said the U.S. has given $4.1 millions as assistance to Non-Governmental Organisations in India that are involved in rehabilitation.

He said Indian authorities had "made it clear to us that they are not requesting bilateral assistance."
