CPI(M) concerned about `anti-people' policies

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 10. The CPI (M) State Committee has expressed concern over the "anti-people policies" being pursued by the Congress Government and urged it to change its policies.

A resolution adopted by the party at the State Committee meeting on Thursday asked the Government to roll back some of its recent decisions that had gone against the interests of the people.

Taking objection to the new excise policy that facilitates opening of new bars, they asked the Congress leadership whether it was a step towards curbing drinking habit (as promised by it in the election manifesto). The latest policy would only fetch more profits to the multinational liquor companies, the meeting felt.

The decision to remove 8, 000 employees of the cooperative societies and close down societies would leave the poor farmers at the mercy of moneylenders, the meeting cautioned. The plan to privatise market agricultural markets would also be a blow to farmers, it observed.

The party criticised the Government for not ensuring minimum support price for cotton, tobacco and turmeric despite the agitation of farmers.
