CHENNAI, FEB. 10. The Teynampet police today arrested Mayandi, union leader of Palmgrove Hotels, on the charge of murdering Manikyaraj Ballal, managing director of the hotel, on Tuesday. A team of police headed by A. Kaliyamurthy, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Teynampet, arrested him at his brother's house at Neelangarai near Chennai on Thursday morning. Mayandi allegedly attacked Ballal when the latter was inspecting the kitchen at the hotel. At a recent meeting with representatives of the union, it was agreed that the number of hotel employees would be maintained at 180. This was ratified at the union general body meeting in which management representatives also participated. However, there was a dispute between the two sides over the demand for regularising the services of a few temporary employees. The police said Mayandi's disappointment over this issue may have led to the attack on Ballal. There were no previous complaints against Mayandi, police added.
