BANGALORE, FEB. 10. A few members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress from Shimoga district today joined the Janata Dal (Secular) along with their followers.

Welcoming the new entrants to the party, the former Prime Minister and President of the Janata Dal (S), H.D. Deve Gowda, said his party is prepared to face gram panchayat elections. It is impossible to deny that the Janata Dal (S), which has taken up pro-people programmes, is a force to reckon with, he added.

Mr. Deve Gowda said that although all politicians are speaking of the problems of farmers, they should respond to the problems with a vision.

In a reference to his detractors in the Janata Dal (S), he said: "I owe my political growth not to one particular caste. I am a born fighter. I always believed in fighting for the right cause irrespective of the consequences. I cannot afford to hibernate and withdraw myself from social responsibilities."

The President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (S), N. Thippanna, claimed hundreds of BJP and Congress leaders and their supporters will join his party in the coming days.

Those who joined the Janata Dal (S ) today included Gajanur Ganesh, L. Muniswamy, R. Krishnappa, Shivappa Nayaka, B.T. Madhava Murthy, Jagadeesh and S. Hanumanthappa. This is the second batch of politicians from Shimoga district to join the Janata Dal (S). The first batch of 127 people, including 23 advocates, joined the party recently. Many leaders of the Bahujan Samajwadi Party from Bellary district joined the Janata Dal (S) in Bellary on Tuesday.
