Security for TDP leaders upgraded

HYDERABAD: The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, reviewed the security given to VIPs at a meeting of the police top brass here on Thursday and ordered additional security for important TDP leaders.

Following the concern expressed by the Telugu Desam Party leadership, Mr. Jana Reddy directed the department to upgrade the security to former Ministers-- Kadiam Srihari and Kodela Sivaprasad-- the city Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, and former MLA, Byreddy Rajasekhara Reddy.

The Minister, who was told that 917 persons were being provided security in the State, asked the officials to periodically review the same.

He emphasised the importance of proper training to the police in the use of the latest gadgets.

MLA's election upheld

HYDERABAD: The High Court judge, V. Eswaraiah, has upheld the election of P.V. Krishna Rao from the Kovvur Assembly constituency, West Godavari district, dismissing the petition filed by a voter, Rama Rao. Mr. Krishna Rao was elected on Telugu Desam Party ticket.

Workshop on health reforms

HYDERABAD: The two-day second regional workshop on " Health sector reforms in India: experiences of select States" will be held at the Administrative Staff College of India here on February 14 and 15.

Apart from sharing the experience of the States engaged in reform process, the workshop seeks to document the content and process of reform initiatives under way in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is organising the workshop in collaboration with State Government and ASCI.

Judicial officer remanded

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Judge of the Anti-Corruption Bureau Court and the Third Additional District Judge, D. Tarakaram, on Thursday remanded the Assistant Public Prosecutor of Elamanchili, K. Rama Rao, to judicial custody till February 23.

Mr. Rama Rao, functioning as the Assistant Public Prosecutor at the Judicial First Class Magistrate's Court, Elamanchili, was caught red-handed by ACB officials on Wednesday on the court premises while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.1,000 from one P. Sannibabu of Dorayyapalem for arguing favourably in a case.

Seven hurt in ghat road mishap

TIRUMALA: Seven persons were injured when the bus in which they were travelling met with an accident on the Tirumala second ghat road in the small hours of Thursday.

According to police, the axle of the bus, which was proceeding towards, Tirumala, broke and the vehicle hit a roadside rock. Six pilgrims were from Ongole the other was a TTD employee. In all, there were 15 passengers onboard.

New TTD EO assumes charge

TIRUMALA: A.P.V.N. Sarma on Thursday took charge as Executive Officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams at Ranganayakula mandapam inside the temple complex. Later at a brief function at Bangaru Vakili inside the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Venkateswara Temple, Mr. Sarma took the oath of office and secrecy.

The Joint Executive Officer, Muktheswar Rao, administered the oath. Mr. Sarma also took oath as ex-officio member of the TTD Trust Board.

Suicide bid at police station

ELURU: A daily wage-earner, Konala Sanku of Mangalakuntapalem near Narasapur, reportedly attempted suicide by hanging himself at Narasapur police station on Thursday.

Sanku was brought to the police station on Wednesday night in connection with an assault case. The police shifted him to hospital.

According to the Narsapur Sub Inspector, T. Tata Rao, a case under the Section 354 (assault) of IPC was registered against Sanku following a complaint by his sister-in-law.

Case against college principal

ELURU: The police have registered a case under the Section 409 (misappropriation of funds) of IPC against the principal of the Government Junior College at Nidadavole, Puli Bhaskara Rao, basing on a complaint by E. Nirmalakumari, Regional Joint Director, Board of Intermediate Education.

According to the complainant, the Principal has illegally withdrawn government funds to the tune of Rs 30 lakh.

He was said to have utilised the funds for payment of wages to six lecturers who were working in the college on a part-time basis since 1992 without prior permission from the government.

Weaver ends life

KARIMNAGAR: A powerloom weaver committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling in his house reportedly due to increasing debts and slump in powerloom sector in Shantinagar locality of Sircilla town on Thursday. Musa Muralidhar (30) was working on rented looms and had incurred huge losses.

Nine naxalites surrender

GUNTUR: Nine naxalites belonging to Julakallu village near Guthikonda surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Jitender, on Thursday.

All of them were involved in four cases of destruction last month in the district, the SP told reporters.

Those who surrendered were Lanjapalli Emaniyelu (25) L. Daniel (23), L. China Masaiah (27), L. Ramanji (20), L. Mariyadas (21), Ramgiri Chinna (20), Inumukkala Sudhakar (19), Inumukkala Srinu (20) and Sk. Gafeer (50).

TRS members quit posts

KARIMNAGAR: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) local bodies representatives of Kamalapur mandal have announced resignations en masse to their posts as well as party on Thursday demanding the Government to resume peace talks with naxalites.

The Kamalapur ZPTC member, V. Sambashiva Rao, the MPP, P. Rama Devi, and seven MPTC members of the mandal announced resignations to their to the party and posts.

Drop in minimum temperatures

Hyderabad: Weather remained dry in the State on Thursday also.

Minimum temperatures fell at many places in Rayalaseema and they changed a little in Telangana and Coastal Andhra. The lowest night temperature during the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded at Arogyavaram at 13 degree Celsius. Forecast for Friday is mainly sunny weather.

Award for Anantapur girl

ANANTAPUR: Amrutha P. Nayar (10) of Anantapur, who is studying Vth standard in a private school year, has won the first prize in the sub-junior category (Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi forms) at the 38the all-India classical dance competitions held at Hyderabad recently.

About 300 children from different parts of the country participated in her category. She received the award at a function organised in Ravindra Bharati on February 6.

Press Academy chief coming

ANANTAPUR: The Chairman of Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh,

D. Amar, will visit Anantapur on February 13. He will inaugurate a workshop for the desk journalists at Press Club and will leave for Hyderabad the same night.

Steps to curb road accidents

CHITTOOR: The Deputy Transport Commissioner, Santhakumar, has issued instructions to the Motor Vehicles Inspectors in the district to take steps to curb increasing road accidents.

He said that road accidents could be prevented to some extent if the Motor Vehicle Inspectors prevent plying of vehicles which were not road worthy and also crack down on vehicles which were found to be overloaded.

Assumes office

Sangareddy: Senior congress leader from Dommat and president of the district Mahila Congress, M. Uma Somasekhar Reddy, assumed office as Regional organiser of Women and Child Development Agency for Medak and Nizamabad districts here on Thursday.

Office-bearers elected

WARANGAL: The Assistant horticulturist, Mohammed Abdul Raqueeb, has been elected president of Kakatiya University NGO's and Class IV employees association.

Others elected to the new body are: G. Somaiah (vice-president),

M. Narasimha Swamy (general secretary), T. Ravinder and B. Raju (joint secretaries) and Md. Shabuddin, treasurer.

Assumes charge

WARANGAL: Senior Congress leader, Ch Srinivasa Reddy, assumed charge as chairman of the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) here on Thursday.

The Town Congress president, Harirama Devi, took over as the Regional Organiser (RO) of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) at the office of the Regional Deputy Director.
