THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 10. Kerala Police edged out Uttar Pradesh 1-0 and moved into the quarterfinal of the 53rd B.N. Mullik memorial all-India Police football tournament here on Thursday. Habeeb Rehman turned out to be the hero on what was a frustrating evening for the host. The goal came off a blunder from Uttar Pradesh goalkeeper Minoj Jaggi, who failed to collect a free-kick from Shimjith properly. Jaggi fumbled his collection and the ball bounced out of his hand and the rebound was put away by Habeeb Rehman in the 78th minute. Until then, Uttar Pradesh had given many uncomfortable moments for the host and even threatened to post an upset win. But the goal came much against the run of play and the U.P. players gave vent to their feelings by indulging in rough play. U.P. was reduced to 10 men when Dheerendra Singh was shown the red card for fouling Edison in an off the ball incident. Kerala will meet Nagaland in the quarterfinal. Nagaland scored an impressive 4-1 win over Uttaranchal. Assam Rifles continued its good form with a 4-0 win over Karnataka. Goa halted the progress of CRPF with a 4-1 win via tie-breaker. The teams were locked 1-1 at end of regulation time. In the shoot-out CRPF drew a blank, while Goa managed to convert three.
