KSEB likely to turn around in two years

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 10. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is expected to turn around in a couple of years, according to the Electricity Minister, Aryadan Mohammed.

The revenue deficit of the Board is Rs.296 crores for the year 2004-05 and it will be zero deficit in the subsequent year. At this rate, the KSEB should be able to shed its `white elephant image' in the next two years, he said in reply to questions in the Assembly today.

It has been noted that there are certain shortcomings in the manner in which material management is effected in the KSEB. They will soon be rectified. Even materials purchased since the days of the Idukki hydro-electric project are still remaining unused. With a more stringent and effective purchase management, the existing stocks will be cleared in a time-bound manner, the Minister said.

Entrepreneurs

The Government will be sparing no effort in setting up the proposed power project at Kannur. Entrepreneurs prepared to meet the stipulations of the Government will be permitted to set up the project, which is expected to solve the problems of power shortage and transmission loss in the Malabar region, Mr. Mohammed said.

As per the 16th Power Survey, Kerala's requirement of electricity by the year 2016-17 will be 56,718 million units.

From solid wastes

There is no proposal to set up an atomic power plant in the State. However, the potential of producing power from solid wastes will be exploited, he said.

The industrial units in the State have to pay to the KSEB a sum of Rs.597.06 crores as charges for the power consumed by them. The departments of the State Government together owed a sum of Rs.150.65 crores and those of the Central Government, Rs.44 lakhs, to the Board towards electricity charges.

The dues outstanding against public sector undertakings are to the tune of Rs.434.45 crores, the Minister said.
